In this lesson, we will learn some simple melodies that feature both Scale Runs and Arpeggios. You should be familiar with these melodies, as they come from popular kid’s songs or Christmas music. If you are not familiar with them, find a recording of them (or use the instructional videos that accompany these lessons) and learn to whistle or hum the melody. Doing this will really help you during this lesson.

We aren’t going to learn gracenotes until Chapter Two, so when you have more than one of the same note in a row, use your tongue to quickly stop the air to your practice chanter, which will provide some separation between notes.

Objectives:

  • Play every note accurately.
    • A crisp, clean transition to each note.
    • No crossing noises! (See Note 1 from Lesson 1-2)
    • Keep your fingers properly positioned on the chanter. (See Lesson 1-1.2)
    • Play rhythms accurately.
      • Tap your foot steadily throughout each melody.
      • Know how many notes go inside each beat. (See Note 2 from Lesson 1 -3)
      • Be sure to execute dotted notes correctly. (See Note 1 from This Lesson)
      • Don’t worry about how fast the tempo is; worry about the steadiness of the tempo.
      • Lastly, make sure what you are playing sounds like the real thing!
