Finally, we are ready to experience the full settings of some bagpipe tunes. If you aren’t familiar with these melodies, it is very important that you listen through the examples on each of the Videos to familiarize yourself with the tunes. Not doing so will make it very hard to know what you are shooting for.

Each tune will have its own Objectives, and list of Hot-spots. Hot-spots are places in the tunes where you need to pay attention to a certain fundamental – they will be marked with a caution sign (      ).

4-5.1: Scot’s wa’ Hae

  • Rule 2: Play each step evenly (the same length).

  • Don’t worry about how fast the tempo is; worry about the steadiness of the tempo.

Hot-spots:

  • (    Watch out for Crossing Noises!    )
  • Last Two Bars: When bars are empty like this, it signifies that you should fill in those bars with material from above. In this case, we want to use the same ending phrase as the first part.

 

4-5.2: Amazing Grace

  • Time Signature: This tune is written in 9/8 time. The best way to think of this is to divide each bar into 3 beats, each of which can be subdivided into 3 eighth notes.

  • Unfamiliar Movement (bar 4) : This is actually just a D throw, but the first step (Play Low G) is omitted, because we are already on Low G. Play the remaining two steps accurately and evenly.
