ALAP/ASAP - Maximizing Contrast in Dot-Cuts

ALAP/ASAP” refers to the idea that dot-cut rhythms in bagpipe music should not be played exactly as written on the page, but instead should show maximum contrast in duration. To achieve this maximum contrast, the dotted note should be played “as long as possible” (ALAP), and the cut note should be played “as short as (musically) possible” (ASAP).

Playing ALAP/ASAP consistently is the primary source of “lift” or “expression” in marches, strathspeys, reels, dot-cut horn pipes, and even some slow airs.
