In this class we take a look at what it takes to be a good composer. We first examine existing work and see what dynamics we can use to make a good tune. What chord structures can be used to invoke emotion in the listener? We also discuss two bar phrasing, high hand & low hand dominant phrasing, and idiom choice.

Building upon the composition info we went over last week, Bruce takes a look at the class presentations from last week's homework. Some very good entries overall as Bruce makes suggestions to improve flow or chord structure note changes. Also why and where to use technique. More idioms and some more advanced methods next week with more class critiques!

Bruce has compiled several books of compositions, which have quite literally changed the landscape of modern light music. Bruce's compositions were featured by several bands (in particular the 78th Frasers from Ontario) as they rose to the top of the world, and redifined the spirit and complexity of modern pipe band medleys. Bruce has taught at Dojo U before, but now we're going to see a different side of him - the creative side! We start with the basics - what type of tune are we looking to write. Also what its feel should be - happy, sad, etc. We then use chord structure to get a basic melody line and start to add to it. Then adding some technique to accentuate what we need. And yes... there is some homework! Session 1 of 4.
