Here we see and hear the beginnings of what has kept Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band at the top of the Grade 1 band scene for so long. In 1990, the band placed 4th overall. While the general quality of pipe band performance and musical presentation has come quite a ways since then, we can get a sense of that classic FMM unison, music and sound. Here is the band in their 2014 winning peformance for comparison.

It’s even more remarkable when you realize that this band has been competitive at the top of the Grade 1 for going on thirty years, and helmed by the same PM in that time. One can also hear that medley construction at the top of the grade has firmly established itself since those days.

Vin Janoski Vin is a long-time piper based on the east coast of the USA. He has been on the Executive Committee of the EUSPBA and been the editor of the acclaimed Voice magazine. Recently, he has played in the Grade 1 Oran Mor Pipe Band, and the Grade 1 Stuart Highlanders pipe band. He currently produces the websites Pipehacker.com and WhiskyTunes.com.... And, needless to say, he spends way too much time than is allowed for any one person playing, writing about, and thinking about bagpiping.
