The chanter, mostly simply put, is the "finger board" of the bagpipe. We put our fingers (in various combinations) on the holes of the chanter in order to produce our melodies. The chanter that accompanies the full bagpipe is called a "bagpipe chanter" or a "pipe chanter." The "practice chanter" is the smaller, quieter version of the pipe chanter that we use to develop our technique and to practice.
